part of the address is called a domain name Domain names were introduced in 2 In this chapter, you learn what makes a good domain name and how to transfer an already existing domain name to your Office Live site The important thing is to pick a domain name for your business that customers can remember immediately without having to write it down and that fits your organization s identity Also, keep it short (ideally, no more than six to eight letters) and easy to spell And be sure the name is clearly different from those of your competitors Take a page from the world of psychology and do some free association Ask customers and colleagues: what s the first thing you think about when you think of our company Write down the answers and try to get domain names that correspond Then make sure no one else already has the name you want it s as easy as typing www[thenameyouwant]com into your web browser s address box If the name is not taken, a registrar s site appears The domain name registrars make it easy for you to search for available names Once you find a domain name, a page appears, prompting you either to apply for a Microsoft Passport account or enter a Passport user name and password if you already have one Passport, Microsoft s user identification system, is used for the Hotmail e-mail service, as well as other Microsoft services Click the button that applies to you (I have an account, or I want to apply for an account), and then click Next Follow the sign in or application process After you enter your personal information, you re prompted to enter your credit card information You are asked for a credit card number even if you plan to sign up for the free Basics service Microsoft explains: the information is needed to verify your identity and to pay for services you might purchase at a later date After entering your information, click Next Read the terms of service, sign your name by typing it at the bottom of the service agreement form, and click I accept You can then begin to create your web site and set up your e-mail addresses Be cautious when choosing a domain name You don t want to infringe on someone else s trademark or cause confusion by choosing a name that s too close to someone else s name (for instance, Lindowscom versus Windowscom, which led to a lawsuit) Do a thorough search with the domain name registrar of your choice to make sure other names that are close to the one you want don t already exist You might also even want to discuss trade name registration and trademark issues with a knowledgeable attorney, so you don t lose your domain name because it s already taken.

Purchasing the ownership rights to your ideal domain name makes sense, even before you begin to create your web site Locking down your domain name as soon as you find it prevents domain name squatters (companies that buy up domain names in bulk and attempt to make money selling them when companies express an interest in them) from buying them If you already have a domain name in the com, org, or net domains registered with an inexpensive registrar, such as GoDaddy (http://wwwgodaddycom), you can transfer it to your Office Live site When you connect to the Find a Domain Name page early in the process of signing up with Office Live, click the button labeled Transfer current domain name and follow the instructions on subsequent screens to switch to Office Live Microsoft uses an Australian domain name registrar, Melbourne IT, to hold its domain name registrations You are the owner of this domain name, not Microsoft If you cancel the Office Live service, you maintain control of your domain name through the web site of Melbourne IT (http://www melbourneitcomau) However, you cannot transfer your domain name to another registrar for 60 days after signing up with Office Live Note, once you cancel your Office Live subscription, you are responsible for paying the annual registration fee for the domain name Melbourne IT s domain name packages start at $35 per year
